Module 1-2 Blog: Project Analysis

This initial blog post will take a look at key information on my chosen company project, which is GameStop. GameStop has over 4,000 stores and operates in 10 different countries. It offers the traditional brick and mortar stores as well as an online website. The company is widely know for buying and selling new and used video games and consoles, but has also ventured into others areas such as selling electronics, toys, and collectibles. GameStop has reported recent losses, but I believe it can create and profit from a new service I am naming GameStop+. This is a cloud based internet service which can run through an app on any console or digital device to play games from GameStop’s immense library of games it offers. GameStop+ will be a subscription based service that for a monthly fee will allow you to play any video games through the cloud and keep save progress from device to device. What makes this service unique is that it can take advantage of all games that GameStop sells across all platforms. Using GameStop’s large distribution network and warehouses, it can utilize these spaces to store servers around the country for the games to be accessed by paying members.

  • Value proposition: GameStop buys and sells new and used video games, peripherals, and accessories. It also sells toys, collectibles, consumer electronics, and wireless devices.
    • GameStop brings value to its customers through entertainment and the enjoyment and flexibility of video games.
  • Profitability: GameStop is not currently profitable because of the Covid-19 pandemic, decline in revenue, store closures, and a lack of focus.
  • SWOT analysis strengths: GameStop’s strengths are its strong distribution network and channels as well as its ability to take advantage of multi-channel selling in stores and online with its other owned operations such as specialty stores, Micromania, EB Games, Zing Pop Culture, and ThinkGeek.
  • Product or service singularity: GameStop can create a new video game service to stream games, using its own platform, to computers, consoles, and smartphones without the need for new or updated gaming hardware. This new service will be named GameStop+.
  • New product or service projections: This new streaming platform can be app based used on pc’s, consoles, or smartphones. This will save money in hardware creation and utilize what devices customers already have, while paying a subscription plan to access all games that GameStop has available, including older retro consoles and games. Money can also be saved by using its wide distribution network to house servers to run video games on a cloud based network.
